The Arduino Nano R4 with headers brings the robust performance of the RA4M1 microcontroller into the beloved Nano form factor, offering a compact, ready-to-use solution for embedded development, creative prototyping, and educational projects.

Overview

Nano R4 merges Arduino’s signature ease of use with the powerful Renesas RA4M1 microcontroller and a range of embedded features – the pinout includes CAN, DAC, VRTC and OpAmp! – enabling effortless scaling from prototyping on the UNO R4 to production-ready applications.
With pre-soldered headers, the Nano R4 is ready out of the box for breadboarding, connecting to Modulino nodes, and jumping into experimentation without additional assembly. It maintains the same pinout as other boards in the Nano family and features an on-board Qwiic connector for rapid sensor and peripheral expansion, as well as a programmable RGB LED for intuitive system feedback. Its single-sided component design makes it ideal for space-constrained products, ensuring a seamless transition from classroom or lab testing to real-world deployment.
Thanks to its compatibility with familiar Arduino tools and libraries (including those for the Arduino UNO R4 Minima), the Nano R4 offers students, designers, and developers a streamlined path to build compact, connected, and production-ready solutions.

Key benefits

  • Effortless transition from prototyping to production: Leverage the RA4M1 microcontroller already trusted in the UNO R4 family, with minimal code adjustments needed.
  • Compact, production-ready design: Tiny 4.3 x 1.7 cm footprint, castellated pins, and single-sided components facilitate easy integration into custom hardware.
  • Plug-and-play prototyping: With pre-soldered headers, it’s easy to jump into breadboarding, testing, and connecting external modules like Modulino nodes.
  • Easy expansion: The built-in Qwiic connector and additional 5V I2C port allow seamless connectivity to a wide range of sensors and actuators.
  • Customizable feedback: Use the programmable RGB LED to indicate system states for faster debugging and smarter user interaction.
  • Flexible, familiar platform: Enjoy Arduino’s rich ecosystem, intuitive development environment, and robust community support.

Application examples to explore

  • Educational and creative prototyping: Tech students and designers can rapidly develop and test interactive installations, product concepts, or course projects with minimal setup.
  • Embedded industrial systems: Thanks to its compact design and production-ready features, the Nano R4 is ideal for creating embedded industrial solutions where space is limited but reliability is critical.
  • Home automation: With easy sensor and actuator integration, the Nano R4 enables fast development of connected and smart products that make your daily life easier.
  • Robotics and automation projects: The small footprint and robust connectivity make it perfect for miniaturized robots, autonomous devices, or interactive art.
  • Custom hardware platforms: For designers seeking hardware customization without starting from scratch, the Nano R4’s castellated design simplifies integration into bespoke PCBs for specialized products in industrial, commercial, or consumer sectors.

FAQs

Is my sketch for the Arduino UNO R4 Minima compatible with the Arduino Nano R4?

Yes, your sketch for the UNO R4 Minima is compatible with the Nano R4. However, you will need to adjust the sketch to align with the Nano R4's pinout.

Can I use hardware compatible with the Arduino Nano (A000005) with the Arduino Nano R4?

Yes, the Arduino Nano R4 was specifically designed to ensure compatibility with previous shields and compatible hardware developed for the Arduino Nano. The Nano R4 maintains the same pinout and electrical compatibility, allowing you to seamlessly use your existing shields and hardware with the new board. This makes it easy to upgrade to the Nano R4 without the need for significant changes or adaptations to your projects.

Can I use my sketch developed for the Arduino Nano (A000005) in the Nano R4?

Yes, if your sketch was developed using the Arduino API. In case you are using instructions only available for the AVR architecture, some changes need to be made to ensure compatibility.

Customer photo review of Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

The nano R4 is an amazing improvement of the nano. Many limits I had with the nano every are now over.

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

I have just tested it, still getting to know it. But I am not that sure where to learn how to program it. Of course I am trying examples and trying to figure it out with that. For now I really like the arduino. Looks good, works perfect.

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

Arduino original dev-kits are perfect but in general a little bit more expensive than it should be, I think.

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

The device has arrived quite fast and works flawless. I needed a proper USB cable for the communication with the PC and for the Arduino IDE software it was necessary o download some extention package for the communication. After these 2 short steps it worked right away as expected!

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

Привіт. Я тільки вчусь. Мені все сподобалось, і все що я запланував зробив. Дякую.

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

A small form factor with software possibilities of a large board... Super Idea!

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

I love this card but unfortunately I based my design on the internal rtc of the chip I had not seen that the clock of the chip was so imprecise. Of sure, nothing beats a real crystal... with a dedicated ds3231 but too much lag to be usable as it is. In any case many possible applications with this card in nano format I love it 👍.

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

I find disappointing to have pin names on the back of the board: for the headers type is a curious choice.

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

It is not backwards compatibale, and seem very fragile as bootloader failed without warning. It would be good to have a tool to upgrade old sketches to run on R4 units

Arduino® Nano R4 with headers

I emailed support to inform them that the Nanos, both the R4 and Every will not connect and upload sketches - I'm still waiting for a response!
